Water Softening
Hard water, handled at the source.
Water Softening from Rare Find: Ion-exchange softeners that remove hardness minerals and protect fixtures and appliances. A water softener exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium using a bed of resin beads. The control valve on top, such as the Clack WS1, decides when the tank regenerates and routes water through each cycle.
Signs it may be worth a look
- Scale build-up on faucets, shower heads and in kettles
- Spotty dishes and stiff laundry
- Soap and shampoo that will not lather well
- Water heater or appliance service recommends softening
How it works with us
- 1
Test hardness
Sizing depends on hardness, iron and your daily water use.
- 2
Size the system
Resin volume and valve settings are matched to your household.
- 3
Install and program
Bypass, drain and brine lines installed; regeneration set to your usage.
Honest limits
- Softening removes hardness. It is not a general-purpose filter for all contaminants.
- Salt-based softening adds a small amount of sodium or potassium to treated water.
Questions about water softening
It is the brain and the plumbing switch. It measures or schedules usage, then drives a piston through backwash, brine, rinse and refill positions.
It depends on hardness and usage. Optional salt-level sensors can tell you when the brine tank is getting low.
